History of The Manor House
The house dates back to the Middle Ages, with previous owners including Henry VIII and James I. The Manor belonged to the Archbishop of Canterbury until 1536, when it was sold to the University of Oxford. The Manor House in Bexley Village is a Grade II listed building. The house is set in approximately 2 acres of land.
History of the Old Kitchen, Apartment 5
Apartment 5 was the original Manor House Kitchen, which is now the lounge. The massive feature fireplace served as the oven for the house. The rooms leading off from what was the kitchen were The Pantry and The Scullery. The Scullery is now our second bedroom. There was another Pantry at the end of the hallway, which is now the bathroom. The main bedroom was a social room that featured a fireplace with doors leading to other areas of the house.
Refurbishment
The apartment has undergone two refurbishments over the past 25 years. A utility area was created in the cellar, accessible directly from within the apartment. It was originally used to store wine, but we have used it for general storage. The 2023 refurbishment included the creation of a utility room off the main hallway, the complete renovation of the en-suite, and the installation of steel beams and sound management in the ceilings of the bedroom and lounge.
Service charge
The service charge of £300 per month (increased in 2025) covers insurance of the house, gardening of all communal areas, window cleaning, general maintenance of the main structure of the house, and house insurance for the house itself. We purchased the freehold in 2003.
A few words from the Vendors
Our History We purchased the apartment off-plan back in 1999. We both worked in London, and the location of the house was perfect for an easy commute to town, as well as village life, in an apartment that offered a tucked-away oasis. Why are we selling Family and friends have moved to Sussex, and we are no longer working in London. We spend weekends travelling to the coast, so after 25 years, we’ve decided to move away. What we love about living here The community with our neighbours in the bungalows. Our courtyard garden awakens with the sun from early morning through to 4:30 pm, making it a lovely space to relax. In the evening, we sit out in the back. Others rarely use it. The location is excellent, as it’s a few minutes walk to Bexley station, a variety of pubs, cafés, and convenience shops.
